Newberry County Release Records
A Newberry County release record documents when the detention center stopped holding a person and may state why. That fact is narrower than the outcome of a charge. A person may leave on bond while the case stays open, finish a jail term, move to another county, enter state custody, or transfer to immigration custody. The county report uses short labels, so the literal wording matters. A court disposition, later prison discharge, and supervision status remain separate events.
The strongest check has four parts. Match the identity with the name, age, and local identifier. Read the stated release date and reason. Then match the charge to the right court docket. Last, check the receiving custodian or supervision office when the record points beyond the county jail. This chain keeps a Newberry County custody end from being mistaken for dismissal, full discharge, or return to the community.
- Release
- The end of custody by the agency named in the record.
- Discharge
- Completion of a sentence or supervision obligation, as shown by the responsible agency.
- Detainer
- A request or legal basis for another agency to take or keep custody.
- Expungement
- A court-authorized process that removes qualifying records from public access.
Newberry County Release Types
Newberry's booking report records several paths out of county detention. Each route changes the next step. Bond labels point to a court case that normally continues. A destination county or `ICE` label points to another custodian. Fines paid may explain why the local hold ended, but the court file supplies the legal detail. A sentence completion should be checked against the sentencing order or formal calculation.
| Recorded route | What it supports | Where to check next |
|---|---|---|
| PR bond or bond posted | Release from the county jail under a bond order | Magistrate, municipal, or General Sessions docket |
| Fines paid | A locally recorded reason for ending custody | Court receipt, order, and disposition |
| Named county or agency | Transfer out of Newberry custody | The receiving jail or agency |
| ICE | County custody ended through an immigration-coded handoff | ICE locator and ERO contact |
| Time served or completion | The custodial part may be satisfied | Sentence record and any supervision record |
A transfer is not a community release. Keep the sending and receiving events distinct. The same rule applies when a Newberry defendant moves to SCDC. The county date ends the jail segment, while the later SCDC release date ends the state-prison segment.
Newberry Release Record Fields
The official fallback is titled “Prisoners/Charges Booked In by Date Range.” It groups entries by booking date, not release date. A later line can show `Released MM/DD/YYYY - REASON`. Readers checking Newberry County released inmates must search the whole entry and not stop at its booking heading. The report may mix people who remain confined with people whose release line falls later in the range.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Name and local identifier | The identity keys used to distinguish similar names |
| Age | An added identity check, not a full birth record |
| Booking-date group | When the report groups the custody entry |
| Charge text | The allegation recorded at booking, not the final court result |
| Release date | The calendar date Newberry records the custody end |
| Release reason | The jail's short bond, payment, or transfer label |
The official Newberry inmate-search page explains the current report and its public display limits.
The screen shows why a dated report should be reached from the stable county page instead of saved as a permanent PDF address.
Request Newberry Release Records
The web display lasts 90 days after release unless an expungement order removes the entry sooner. That is not a destruction rule. For an older booking or a fuller release record, use the Newberry County Sheriff FOIA page and its form. A narrow request reduces search time and helps the office identify the right event.
- Give the full name, approximate booking and release range, and local identifier if known.
- Ask for the booking sheet, release or discharge screen, exact release date and time, recorded reason, and receiving agency if transferred.
- Submit by email to FOIA@ncso.sc.gov, in person, by mail marked “FOIA REQUEST,” or by fax.
- Review any estimate, pay by an accepted method, and compare the response with the related court record.

The sheriff form states that an availability response is made within ten working days and that redaction or denial will cite its legal basis. Some listed products have fixed rates, but the research does not establish a flat fee for every release record or photo. Ask for an estimate rather than assuming one.
Note: Electronic delivery can avoid page-copy charges, though lawful search, retrieval, and redaction costs may still apply.
Newberry Release Record Law
South Carolina FOIA §30-4-30 governs inspection and copying subject to exemptions. It also requires documents identifying people confined during the prior three months to be available during office hours for in-person inspection without a written request. Newberry implements a related 90-day post-release web window. Older public records can still follow ordinary request procedures. The statutory window is an access floor, not proof that a file has been destroyed.
Juvenile, sealed, expunged, investigative, and protected personal material can be withheld or redacted. Under S.C. Code §17-1-40, a qualifying expungement can make arrest and booking material nonpublic. Newberry also says its released entry may disappear before 90 days after an expungement order. Never infer expungement from a missing result alone. The cause may instead be report timing, spelling, the current outage, or age of the record.
A Newberry County jail release proves a custody event. The court file, prison record, and supervision record answer separate legal and status questions.
Find Newberry County Released Inmates
Start with the system that held the person. A released county detainee can remain in Newberry's 90-day report. A person transferred to SCDC belongs in state corrections records. Federal and immigration cases use their own locators. When a public screen does not settle the issue, call the custodian or request the underlying record.
- Open the stable Newberry inmate-search page and follow the latest report link.
- Search the surname, then match first name, age, identifier, charges, and booking group.
- Read the exact release date and reason. Follow any named receiving county, SCDC, or ICE transfer.
- Check the Newberry court docket for bond, disposition, sentence, and later orders.
- For a state-prison case, use the SCDC released search and PPP when supervision may follow.
- After the online window, file a focused sheriff or SCDC request.
Roster absence is weak proof. Newberry describes a next-day status conversion, and a person may also have moved into another agency's custody.
The Newberry County 24-hour release list method explains how to make a same-day subset from the broader report. It does not turn that report into an official rolling feed.
Newberry's 90-Day Release Search
Newberry does not publish separate official 24-hour and 72-hour release feeds. Its official product covers released people for 90 days. During the researched outage, the interactive service points to a dated booking-range PDF with no pictures. To find a recent release, filter the explicit `Released` line by date. Do not filter only by the booking heading, since a person booked earlier may leave during the period being checked.
Cadence is not promised. The county does state that released information and a photo are removed, converted to another format, and expected to reappear the next day. Call the Newberry County Detention Center at 803-321-2141 for a same-day answer. A current PDF entry without a release line is not a substitute for direct custody confirmation.
Note: Always note the report date because Newberry's linked PDF and displayed booking range change over time.
Newberry Release Reasons Explained
Newberry's report does more than mark a person released. It records short reasons such as `PR BOND`, `BOND POSTED`, `FINES PAID`, `ICE`, and a destination county. That added field changes the search. Bond points toward a court case that may remain active. A county name means the next status belongs to that jurisdiction. `ICE` means the local jail stopped holding the person through an immigration-coded handoff.
Keep the source words intact. Abbreviations can be explained with care, but they should not be rewritten into broader claims. `PR BOND` ordinarily means personal-recognizance bond, while its legal conditions come from the signed bond order. A named transfer destination is not proof that the person later left that agency. This literal approach preserves what Newberry recorded and makes uncertainty clear.
Newberry Bond Hearings and Release
Newberry Magistrate Court publishes bond proceedings at the detention-center address at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., seven days a week. That schedule explains when bond matters are heard. It does not guarantee when a person walks out. Paperwork, payment, another hold, transport, and jail processing can separate authorization from physical release.
Use the release line or direct jail confirmation for the custody-end time. Then read the bond order and case docket for terms. A `PR BOND` or `BOND POSTED` reason establishes release from Newberry custody under the recorded mechanism, not dismissal of the charge. For a person expected out after a hearing, the jail is the best source for current processing status.
SCDC Newberry Release Search
A Newberry defendant sent to state prison stops being a county-custody case. The SCDC current inmate search locates people presently incarcerated under state corrections control, using an SCDC number or exact name. Its disclaimer says data reflect the prior midnight and exclude released SCDC offenders, county detention sentences, and people only on community supervision. Absence from that current tool does not supply a discharge date.
For an actual state release, use the separate SCDC Released Inmate Search. The visible form asks for a release-date range and county. Selecting Newberry means committing county, not current residence or physical release destination. If no result appears, verify spelling and date range, then use SCDC FOIA. Do not return to the current-inmate tool and treat a missing result as proof.
| Search field | Use | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| SCDC number | Strong identity match in current state custody | Does not replace the released search |
| Name | Find a current SCDC record | Compare identifiers before joining records |
| Release-date range | Search the separate released application | Use the actual range allowed by the live form |
| Committing county | Narrow state releases tied to Newberry cases | Not a residence filter |
The official SCDC form shows the statewide route used when the Newberry release event was only a transfer into prison.
Reading the current and released applications as separate tools prevents county release dates from being confused with later state discharge dates.
Newberry Courts After Release
Physical custody and the case do not end together. Newberry Magistrate Court handles qualifying traffic and misdemeanor matters. More serious charges move to General Sessions, where the Clerk of Court keeps warrants, bonds, indictments, and related papers. Municipal coverage in the statewide index can be incomplete. The charge and case prefix determine which court record is controlling.
Use the South Carolina case-record search, select Newberry, and match case number when possible. Check each charge on a multi-case booking. A filed order can show dismissal, sentence, bond, or another legal event long after Newberry's 90-day jail display has ended. For General Sessions copies, the Clerk is at 1226 College Street, 803-321-2110, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; posted copies are $0.35 per page.
The official Newberry Clerk of Court page identifies the office that maintains those General Sessions records.
This court route answers what happened to the charge, while the jail record answers when local custody ended.
Newberry Booking Fee and Release
Newberry County Code §30.21 assesses a $25 booking fee for people booked for covered state or local violations and certain family-court detainees. The local judicial officer collects it in addition to bond before release. The ordinance also permits stated trust-account collection steps.
Payment is not the legal basis for release. It also does not prove that discharge occurred. Bond authorization, sentence status, other holds, and jail processing still control. Use the recorded release line for the county custody event, and use the court order when the legal reason matters.
Newberry Post-Release Status Checks
Parole, probation, and community supervision are managed by SCDPPPS, not by SCDC or the jail. Probation may be ordered without prison, while parole follows incarceration. Search the state PPP system and contact the Newberry office for current confirmation. A prior parole grant is not the physical release date, and a PPP record is not proof that every listed person was once in the Newberry jail.
South Carolina VINE and VINELink cover participating county, SCDC, and PPP records and can send custody-change alerts. BOP's locator covers federally sentenced people from 1982 forward. ICE's locator covers current detainees and some recent releases, while ERO is the fallback for unresolved exact matches. USMS has no public person-level release roster for federal pretrial custody.
| Status question | Correct Newberry route | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|
| Still in county jail? | Current county report and direct jail call | Roster absence alone is not release proof |
| Released by county? | Explicit release line or sheriff record | Release does not mean case closed |
| Discharged by SCDC? | SCDC released search or records request | County transfer date is not state discharge |
| Under supervision? | PPP search and Newberry office | Prior hearing result is not current status |
| Federal or ICE status? | BOP or ICE locator and agency fallback | “Not in custody” remains agency-specific |
For the state-prison timing question, the Newberry County projected release date resource separates a changeable projection from the later historical release date.
Newberry Detention Center Project
Newberry County records document a detention-center housing project and a 2025 lowest-responsible-bid recommendation of $10,167,000. County Council considered the award. Those records establish procurement activity only. They do not establish that construction is complete, that new space is occupied, or that any Newberry County release procedure changed.
This distinction matters because facility news can be mistaken for a current operating rule. Release searches should stay tied to the sheriff's inmate-search page, records office, and detention-center confirmation line. Capital plans do not change the meaning of the county's `Released` field.
Newberry Release Facilities and Systems
Five facilities or systems control the possible Newberry custody and post-custody paths. Only the detention center is the county jail. The PPP office supervises people in the community and holds no inmates. No active SCDC prison, BOP facility, or dedicated ICE detention site was identified in Newberry County.
- Newberry County Detention Center: county releases, bond exits, and transfers shown in the local report.
- South Carolina Department of Corrections institutions: statewide prison custody and later SCDC discharge.
- Newberry County PPP Office: local parole, probation, and other community supervision.
- Federal Bureau of Prisons system: federal incarceration and displayed release dates.
- ICE detention system: immigration custody checks after an ICE-coded county handoff.
Read each result as a statement from that custodian. When a person moves between systems, preserve each date and reason as a separate milestone.
